The Western
Published in Hardcover by Aurum Press (January, 1991)
Author: Phil Hardy
Average review score:

An Invaluable Resource
If, like me, you love Westerns and have cable, this is a book you need to own. Its detailed synopses and reviews have helped me over and over again in deciding what previously-unknown movie to set the timer for. Each capsule-essay includes year of release, run time, director, major stars, and some information about the story, with brief critical remarks. The many bw photographs, though rather small, are just so much gravy. You can also just sit down with it and start going through the listings so you can compose a Wish List! With this book and Fenin & Everson's "The Western," you have a good basic foundation in Western-film criticism and history.

A very enjoyable reference book
More than a dry listing of what westerns came out in what year, The Overlook Encyclopedia is actually fun to read.

The book begins in the 1930s (so no silent Westerns)and lists the Westerns that came out each year, giving a brief plot synopsis and then an evaulation.

The value of the book is that it shows the reader how many Westerns Hollywood made and when production rose and fell off. Also, the comments on the individual films are interesting and can point the reader in the direction of some films he might not otherwise have heard of.

The book concludes with several "ten best Western" lists from different film critics. Overall, a useful book for anyone interested in this genre.

Who Took the Book? (Frank and Joe Hardy. the Clues Brothers, No 6)
Published in Paperback by Minstrel Books (May, 1998)

iT IS JUST LIKE ANY BOOK THAT DIXON WRITES: FANTASTIC
IT IS A GREAT MYSTERY, I HAVE THROUGHLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK I HAVE ALWAYS PICTURE MYSELF GOING ON THESE MYSTERIES WITH THEM

Really good
This book was funny. I got it 6 days ago. Here's the big question: IS FRANK HARDY A THIEF?? No way! But somebody's making it look as if he is. A really cool book on baseball statistics was stolen from the school library. Now it's made a sudden and surprising comeback-in Frank's backpack! Frank and Joe have a pretty good batting average when it comes to solving mysteries. But this one is no fun, because if Frank gets the blame, he'll miss his basketball team's first game of the season! The ending is funny when Wendy, the thief, and also the girl who has a crush on Joe, says she won't wear Love Is in the Air perfume anymore and Joe tells her not to have a crush on him until they were in high school. I think that's weird. How come in The Hardy Boys series she wasn't mentioned? I mean they are in high school! Everyone else was mentioned except for the bullies.

Winter Words: Poetry & Personal Writings
Published in Audio Cassette by Naxos Audio Books (April, 2000)
Authors: Thomas Hardy, Bruce Alexander, and Janet Maw
Average review score:

A welcome celebration of Hardy's poetry.
In North America, Thomas Hardy is better known for his novels than for his poems, but Hardy himself prized his verse more, and this recording demonstrates the breadth and depth of his achievement as a poet.

It features compelling performances of more than 70 of Hardy's poems by two distinguished British actors, Bruce Alexander and Janet Maw. Hardy wrote the earliest of these as a teenager and the last of them some seven decades later. Carefully-chosen excerpts from Hardy's autobiography and the writings of his first wife, Emma, help place trace the biographical sources of many of the poems.

What's most impressive is Hardy's versatility: of the 70-odd poems here, no two use the same form, and the subjects range from the joys of young love to the wistful resignation of the poet, in his eighties, musing on fate and change.

When the Academy of American Poets asked me to name ten poetry recordings that every library should have, for a feature on their web site, this was one of my choices.

Exploring the breadth and depth of a great poet.
In North America, Hardy is better known as a novelist than as a poet, but it was his poems that Hardy himself prized most, and they are highly regarded in Britain today.

This recording features performances of more than 70 of Hardy's poems by two distinguished British actors, Bruce Alexander and Janet Maw. The poems are accompanied by carefully-chosen excerpts from Hardy's autobiography and the writings of his first wife, Emma.

The result is a compelling program that makes an excellent introduction to newcomers to Hardy's work and will also delight those who have already discovered this wise and compassionate poet. What is most impressive is Hardy's versatility: of the 70-odd poems here, I don't think any two use the same form, and the content ranges from the joys of young love to the widtful resignation of the poet, in his eighties, musing on fate and change.

When the Academy of American Poets asked me to name ten poetry recordings that every library should have, this was one of my recommendations.

50 Hikes in Connecticut: From the Berkshires to the Coast
Published in Paperback by Countryman Pr (May, 1996)
Authors: David Hardy, Gerry Hardy, and Sue Hardy
Average review score:

Best CT Hiking Guide Available
Connecticut residents who love the outdoors should consider this guide. The Hardy family offers an impressive array of hikes for people of all skill levels.

Each hike is thoroughly researched and includes detailed maps and photographs. I relied heavily on the maps and found them to be 100% accurate. The site descriptions are especially helpful. They include driving directions, parking instructions, and well-informed commentary about the trail itself. You will know precisely what vegetation or bird life to look for at specific points during your trip. Keep this book open during your hikes to fully appreciate the experience.

Logical organization enables efficient selection of hikes by region or length. Readers should be assured that this truly is a Connecticut book. The authors do not discriminate in favor of the oft-traversed northwest region. Connecticut hikers would do well to have this guide in their backpack.

Adaptive Optics for Astronomical Telescopes (Oxford Series in Optical and Imaging Sciences, 16)
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (August, 1998)
Author: John W. Hardy
Average review score:

The book is a must for readers interested in adaptive optics
The book does an excellent job of describing the basic principles and the practice of adaptive optics for astronomical applications. The author was a pioneer in adaptive optics and in the 1970s he built the first system capable of compensating a large astronomical telescope at visible wavelengths. The book gives a good history of adaptive optics including an excellent bibliography. Wavefront sensors, correctors, laser beacons, and wavefront reconstruction and control systems are described. Current adaptive optics programs are described and future prospects are discussed. I had the good fortune of working with the author at the time the first adaptive optics system was built and the author conveys in this book the excitement we felt about adaptive optics at that time. While the book is very specialized and technical, and the number of readers who will enjoy the book is limited, if you are interested in adaptive optics the reading of this book is a must.

Approaching the Center: Poems
Published in Paperback by New Issues Press (01 March, 2001)
Author: Myronn Hardy
Average review score:

Excellent Debut
"Approaching The Center" is perhaps one of the most interersting works I have read in quite some time. I have long been anticipating the release of this book of poems, which elaborates on Myronn E. Hardy's journeys through life. Some of the topics in the book range from adolescent experiences from the early 1980's in rural eastern and southern Arkansas to his experiences in South Africa, to a tribute to his father. However, this is only a sample of the vast number of ideas and experiences he has to share. An absolutely phenomenal work, that I shall be reading for many hours to come. Highly Recommended!

Congratulations, Myronn... on a job well done.
